How to Tune Up a 98 Dodge Caravan Sport 3.3
The ’98 Dodge Caravan Sport 3.3 uses a distributorless ignition with one coil for every two cylinders. It uses a crankshaft sensor to relay the exact position of the crankshaft relative to the position of the number-one cylinder to the compression stroke. The primary concern when doing a tune-up on this engine is to replace the spark plugs to reduce the voltage necessary to jump the gap on worn plugs. It will be necessary to check the wires and coils for arcing due to age, clean the throttle body, clean the injectors and rid the intake manifold of coke deposits.

Things You’ll Need:
* 3/8-inch drive ratchet
* Spark-plug socket
* 3/8-inch drive extension
* Fuel-injection cleaner
* Spray bottle of water
* Carburetor cleaner
* Common screwdriver
* Spark plugs
* Air-cleaner element
Step 1
Lift the hood and start the engine. Spray water on the spark-plug wires, using the spray bottle. Look for arcing. If you can see sparks, the wires are bad and need to be replaced.
Step 2
Shut the engine off and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Pull the spark-plug boots off the plugs. Replace the spark plugs, using the spark-plug socket, making sure to gap the spark plugs to .050.
Step 3
Pour the fuel-injection cleaner into the fuel tank. Hold the throttle body open with the linkage and spray the inside with the carburetor cleaner until clean.
Step 4
Install the new air-cleaner element. Install the air cleaner and duct to the throttle body but leave the clamp loose for the time being. Start the engine and allow it to warm up for two minutes.
Step 5
Crack the air duct at the throttle body just enough to insert the carburetor-cleaner nozzle. Spray the remainder of the can into the manifold to clean the intake-manifold cokeing. Tighten the clamp on the air duct at the throttle body.
