Certain vehicles may experience condensate (water) leakage from the Heater Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) that could lead to illumination of the airbag warning lamp, and possibly cause inadvertent airbag deployment.

This campaign follows another recall where dealers had to replace the HVAC drain grommet to correct the issue causing the leak.

As usual, concerned owners will be notified to visit their dealer to ensure the faulty part is replaced.

Chrysler will be sold predominantly in North America, the United Kingdom and Ireland; Lancia will be sold in continental Europe.

Compact sedan: Chrysler is scheduled to get a new compact sedan built on the same Fiat CUSW platform that supports the new Dodge compact. The Chrysler compact, scheduled to arrive in 2013, likely for the 2014 model year, will fill a segment in which Chrysler currently has no entry.

200: For 2011, Chrysler restyled and re-engineered the unloved Sebring so extensively that CEO Sergio Marchionne decided a new name was in order. So out went the rental-car favorite Sebring and in came the 200.

The 200 is scheduled to be replaced by a Fiat-based sedan in 2013. The Fiat-based sedan is set to be the first vehicle to get Chrysler’s six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

300: The flagship 300 sedan was redesigned and re-engineered in 2011. More improvements are in store for the 2012 model year, including an eight-speed automatic transmission supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen AG. The eight-speed will debut in the new S series 300.

The 300, which got some interior improvements in 2011, will get further upgrades in 2012, including a new instrument display. Going on sale this fall is the 300 SRT8, powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that cranks out 470 hp. The SRT8 also gets a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

Town & Country: The next generation of Chrysler’s minivan is due in 2014, according to Chrysler’s planning documents. Chrysler Group has said it wants to eliminate duplicate vehicles in showrooms, which implies that either the Town & Country or Dodge Grand Caravan will be deleted or modified as a crossover. The Town & Country has been Chrysler’s answer to upscale versions of the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. The Grand Caravan has been positioned in the below-$30,000 price bracket. Deciding the minivan issue will be one of Chrysler’s most difficult challenges.

In the U.S., there’s Chrysler. In Europe, there’s Fiat’s premium-range Lancia brand. Over the next few years, the two will slowly but surely merge to mirror one another across the pond, with each brand picking up some of the other’s cars. While Lancia will soon begin selling the Chysler 200, Chrysler 300, and Chrysler Town & Country models as the Lancia Flavia, Lancia Thema, and Lancia Voyager, respectively, the U.S. brand hasn’t gotten the favor returned quite yet. Expect that to change soon when the Chrysler brand receives two new vehicles based on Lancia models, moving Chrysler further upscale.

What’s Hot: While much improved, the flawed Chrysler 200 will be exiting after 2013 to make way for an all-new, sophisticated Fiat-based sedan with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

What’s Not: The Chrysler Town & Country could be turned into a crossover, taking away one of the better minivan options on the market (although the Dodge Grand Caravan will remain).

Other changes include:

• Compact sedan: Sharing its underpinnings with the upcoming Dodge compact, the Chrysler variant should reach further upscale and open up a new segment for the brand in 2013 as a 2014 model.
• Chrysler 200: An all-new model will debut with Chrysler’s first use of a dual-clutch transmission.
• Chrysler 300: After debuting last year, the 2012 Chrysler 300 will get a new instrument panel, a new eight-speed automatic in the V-6 models, and the 300C SRT-8 with 470 horsepower will hit showrooms in the fall.
• Town & Country: Chrysler’s luxury minivan is set for a redesign for 2014, but execs don’t want overlap with the cheaper Dodge Grand Caravan. One of the two will undergo a makeover, turning into a crossover in the process. It would make more sense for that to be the Town & Country, in keeping with the premium image Chrysler is trying to cultivate.

The all-new 2011 Dodge Durango offers consumers 45 safety and security features, including standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which delivers three security features to improve overall vehicle stability both on- and off-road: electronic roll mitigation (ERM), which reacts and applies brakes during extreme situations, and Hill-start Assist (HSA), which works with standard Trailer-sway Control (TSC) to enhance off-road and towing capabilities.

The Detroit Big 3 all showed growth through July 2011 compared to the same month one year ago but thanks to a gain of 20%, the Chrysler Group beat their cross town rivals and all other major automotive groups with the closest competition being the BMW Group at 11.7%. With 112,026 total vehicles sold throughout the month of July, Chrysler ranked fourth overall in terms of sales volume, trailing General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Toyota while distancing themselves quite a bit from Nissan Motors and American Honda.

The Fiat brand once again posted a monthly sales record as they sold 3,038 subcompact 500s last month – an improvement of 68% over last month. This brings the total sales of the new Fiat 500 to 7,982 units.

Fuelled by a growing construction sector and customers seeking fuel-efficient vehicle alternatives, Chrysler LLC has overtaken Ford Motor Co. as the top year-to-date seller of light trucks in Canada.

“It’s also a combination of consumer-driven sales and a desire for smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles,” said Carlos Gomes, an economist with Scotia Capital. “The Jeep brand is doing extremely well for Chrysler, with year-to-date sales up about 25 per cent and pickup sales up about 18 per cent. Chrysler has out-performed Ford in that segment and it has resulted in stronger sales in a very important segment for Chrysler.”

Gomes also said consumers are opting for crossovers for practical, fuel-efficiency reasons and the construction sector is boosting pickup sales. Sales of the Dodge Journey, which is smaller than a traditional SUV and uses less gasoline, increased more than Ford’s Escape and General Motors’ Chevy Equinox, according to Scotia Capital.

Scotia Capital. Gomes also said high fuel prices have led consumers to move toward compact cars and car-based SUVs because of their fuel efficiency.

“The market, as a whole, seems to be moving in that direction in Canada, so it appears to me as if this development has legs,” said Gomes.

According to Scotia Capital, light truck sales through the first six months of the year increased more than twice as quickly as Canada’s industry average over the same period a year ago.

In the past 18 months, about 85 per cent of Chrysler’s sales have been generated by this segment.

According to Chrysler, the Journey, Dodge Grand Caravan, Ram pickups and Jeep Wrangler SUVs all had their best-ever June sales in Canada last month. It’s the latest in a string of good news for Chrysler that includes positive vehicle reviews from Consumer Reports and improving initial quality rankings from J.D. Power & Associates.

“These types of positive reviews are a major factor when it comes to consumer perception and confidence,” said Gomes.

Paint damage from rail dust occurs when very fine, hot steel debris from rail tracks and train wheels lands on the paint of a new car being transported to a dealership. This hot “dust” literally melts into the clear coat and paint on the vehicle. If it hasn’t penetrated through the clear coat, it can sometimes be removed by careful wet sanding and polishing. If it has penetrated into the color coat, the only solution is repainting. Left unrepaired, the steel debris begins to rust — as you have discovered.

Because rail dust damage happens only during new-car transport, I agree with your friend. Have the dealership confirm the damage is rail dust, and hopefully Chrysler will help with the repair.

I bought a bright maroon 1983 Dodge 400 convertible three years ago that looked like it had never been polished. I polished it, but the hood dulled out in a week. I tried several products specifically designed to remove oxidation and restore color. They lasted a little longer but still dulled out. Then I tried WD-40. It works and takes less time, but still eventually dulls out. A body shop told me the only fix is sanding and repainting.

The body shop is correct. Once the paint on a vehicle has “died,” there’s no permanent fix. As you’ve discovered, it’s possible to make the paint shine — for a while. But it won’t last long because the paint has dried out and oxidized beyond restoration.

My daughter’s 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe is displaying areas of flaking clear coat on the top and fenders. Her SUV is black and has been polished and waxed at least once a year. Is it possible to have the clear coat stripped and new clear coat sprayed on, or does the car require a complete paint job?

I asked my son, Paul Jr., a body and paint specialist, if this can be done successfully. He said that stripping and reapplying the clear coat might — and he emphasized “might” — be possible, but only if done exceptionally well. The clear coat would have to be very carefully sanded off using nothing coarser than 500- or 600-grit in order to not leave sand scratches that would show through new clear coat. But, he emphasized, if the sanding goes through the color at any point, the entire panel would likely have to be fully sanded and repainted.

He suggested that with a 10-year-old vehicle, it probably would be better to completely refinish the affected panels.

I have a 1997 Crown Victoria and have recently had some steering problems. At highway speeds everything is normal, but at lower speeds it sticks during a turn. The car has a steering gearbox and Pitman arm, so is the gearbox failing?

The first step is to have a qualified shop carefully inspect all the front-end steering and suspension components like ball joints, steering tie rods, drag link and idler arm. Also, carefully check the steering column and universal joint that connects the column to the steering box. Even tire pressures, alignment or binding in the steering column could cause this symptom.

There is an adjustment for free play in the steering box, but if an adjustment is necessary, leave it to a pro.

“There is no doubt that Chrysler Group has taken a huge step forward this quarter,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, Chrysler Group LLC.  “Refinancing our debt and repaying our government loans six years early, reinforces our conviction that we are on the right path to rebuilding this Company and restoring it to its rightful place on the global automotive landscape.

Various events took place during the second quarter that had impact on Chryslers continuing recovery.

• April 12, Announcement of Fiat’s ownership interest in company increasing from 25% to 30% base on the company’s achievement of performance-related milestones
• May 24, Payments of $5.9 billion and $1.7 billion (including accrued interest and additional consideration) to fully repay the U.S. Treasury and Canadian governments, six years ahead of schedule.
• Jeep Grand Cherokee was introduced in European markets along with a restyled Jeep Compass; both powered by a diesel engine.
• Announced $114 million investment in new equipment at Trenton Engine Complex to support increased production of the Pentastar V-6 engine.  Investment is expected to create 268 new jobs
• The 2011 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Challenger ranked the highest in the minivan and mid-size sporty car segments, in J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Initial Quality Study(SM) released June 23.
• Chrysler named the “Top Popular Brand” in AutoPacific’s 15th annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards in May, an industry benchmark for measuring the customer satisfaction of more than 68,000 new vehicle owners.
• The Fiat 500 has received more than 60 international awards since its debut.
• Connected World magazine awarded the Company’s Mopar brand, a Value Chain Award in the automotive category for its industry-first Electronic Vehicle Tracking System (EVTS)
